GREENBURGH-NORTH CASTLE UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
John Marino
MEMORANDUM
To: The Greenburgh-North Castle UFSD Community
From: John Marino, Superintendent of Schools
Date: August 20th, 2025
Subject: Kaplan Career Academy - Delayed Start
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This memo is to inform you of a necessary change to the start date for students at Kaplan Career Academy for the 2025-2026 school year. The initial start date for students was scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Due to unforeseen construction delays and the time needed to secure the final necessary permits, we must delay the start for students until Monday, September 8, 2025.
The district has exhausted all possible efforts to open on the originally scheduled date. Delaying the start is not an easy decision but is the most responsible action to ensure the safety of our students.
What This Means for Your Child
● The start of the school year for Kaplan Career Academy students is now September 8, 2025.
● This change only affects the start of the school year. All other holidays and scheduled school days will remain the same.
● The emergency closure dates that were originally scheduled in the calendar will be used to ensure the building is ready to welcome students.
● The instructional days missed will be made up through a combination of using the existing emergency closure dates and a change in the calendar. Please see the calendar on our website for details.
Our Plan Moving Forward
We are fortunate that our Emergency Response Plans include provisions for remote instruction, which we utilize for things like inclement weather. We have worked closely with our faculty to ensure that your child will continue to receive the high-quality education you expect.
The program has even added new support staff, including a Licensed Behavioral Analyst, a Speech Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, and additional behavioral support specialists, to enhance our services.
The current plan is to have a "soft-opening" on September 8. This will allow students and staff to occupy a safe and code compliant portion of the building. The full area for Kaplan Career Academy is not expected to be accessible until late December. We plan to have a "grand opening" in January following the holiday recess, when all construction is complete. This phased-in plan has been rigorously reviewed and approved by the New York State Education Department, and the Office of Facilities. As with any major construction project, delays can occur, and this one is no exception. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and flexibility.
We are optimistic that we will be able to hold an open house prior to the students’ attending, tentatively on September 5th, 2025 from 8:00am-2:00pm.
Should any other changes become necessary, we will notify stakeholders as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued support as we work to provide the best possible learning environment for your children.
Sincerely,
John Marino
